STRONG (Boys)

Supporting Strength, Discipline, and Positive Futures for Boys

STRONG Boys is a 12-month, fully funded, prevention-focused programme for boys aged 11–17 in Scunthorpe’s —areas experiencing high levels of deprivation, antisocial behaviour, school exclusions, and youth vulnerability.

The programme combines Boxercise, gym-based strength training, emotional regulation, and mentoring, delivered twice weekly. STRONG Boys is designed to reduce risk-taking behaviours, increase physical activity, and provide safe, consistent male role models for boys who are often overlooked or disengaged.

Programme Highlights:

🥊 Boxercise and behaviour awareness workshops

💪 Strength and conditioning in a supervised gym setting

🧠 Emotional regulation, discipline, and life skills

🤝 Positive male role modelling and peer support

Cost: Fully funded (free to attend)

About STRONG Boys

STRONG Boys is a structured, evidence-informed programme supporting boys who may be:

Experiencing low confidence or poor emotional regulation

Struggling at school or at risk of exclusion

Disengaged from traditional sports or services

In foster care, young carers, or with SEMH needs

At risk of exploitation, antisocial behaviour, or negative peer influence

Funded by Sport England, the programme focuses on early intervention and prevention, using physical activity as a gateway to improved wellbeing, trust, and positive behaviour change.

Programme Structure & Weekly Sessions

STRONG Boys runs twice weekly, combining high-energy physical activity with structured learning and mentoring.

Tuesday 3:45 – 5:15 pm | 90 Minutes: Boxercise & Behaviour Awareness Workshop
High-paced pad work, footwork drills, and partner challenges are used to develop discipline, focus, self-control, and teamwork.

Physical training is integrated with short workshops and guided discussions covering:

Managing anger and conflict

Peer pressure and decision-making

Personal safety and knife crime awareness

Understanding exploitation, grooming, and county lines

Building respect, self-worth, and emotional regulation

Male coaches model positive behaviour, reinforce accountability, and provide a safe space for boys to express themselves and channel frustration constructively.

Thursday 3:45 – 4:30 pm | 45 Minutes: Strength & Conditioning (Gym-Based)
A progressive gym programme focused on building physical strength, confidence, and self-efficacy.

Sessions include:

Dumbbells, resistance machines, and sled work

Functional circuits and strength challenges

Team-based tasks that encourage cooperation and communication

Technique development and safe training practices

Boys learn how to train safely, set personal goals, track progress, and develop healthy routines. Older participants are encouraged into peer mentoring roles, supporting younger boys and strengthening positive relationships.

Physical & Mental Health

Physical activity has long been shown to improve mental health and build self-esteem, resilience and self-discipline.

Anti-social Behaviour & Crime Prevention

Physical activity has a huge role to play in helping ex-offenders to get back on their feet and build positive lives free of crime.

Physical activity has the power to transform offenders’ outlook on life – it brings together disparate groups, develops communication skills and delivers improvements in physical and mental health.

Yet physical activity has the power to go much further than that. It has a vital role to play in addressing the very issues that lead to crime in the first place, particularly among younger people.

Physical activity offers new opportunities for disengaged young people – fostering social connections, delivering learning opportunities and exposing them to positive influences.
